Cleaning and Preservation of Graduation Gowns and Caps

Most gowns are made of:​

• Polyester blends: Durable but heat-sensitive.​

• Cotton: Breathable, prone to shrinking in hot water.​

• Satin/silk accents: Delicate, need gentle handling.​

Caps have cardboard bases with fabric covers, and tassels may have metallic details.​

Inspect for stains, loose threads, or delicate decorations. For rented gowns, check the rental agreement—some prohibit home washing.​

• Food/oil stains: Blot with a cloth, then dab with mild detergent and cold water. Rinse and air dry.​

• Makeup/ink: Use rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball (test first), then wipe with a damp cloth.​

• Grass/dirt: Apply a baking soda paste, wait 10 minutes, then rinse.​

• Polyester: Machine wash on gentle with cold water and mild detergent. Use a mesh bag.​

• Cotton: Hand wash in cold water to avoid shrinking.​

• Satin/silk: Hand wash separately with delicate detergent; don’t wring.​
